Food Manufacturing Safety and OSHA Hazard Communication Training

Today we wrapped up a training session on the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), covering the OSHA pictograms you should be able to recognize before handling any material in the facility.

We went through how to read product labels and locate the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which is still your best friend when you have doubts about a material’s risks.

A few key takeaways on PPE:

  • Food Safety PPE: hairnet, beard net, goggles, uniform. Always, no exceptions, the moment you’re near raw materials or finished products.
  • Respiratory Protection: R&I and Production folks: if something is flagged as a Carcinogen, Mutagen, or Sensitizer, throw on a half-face mask on top of your usual gear.
  • Hazard Reporting: not sure if a material is approved for sampling? Don’t guess, loop in QC and let them validate against the TDS and COA first.

We ended the meeting with a Kahoot-style quiz on Oxidizers, Flammables, and Acute Toxic pictograms, honestly the best way to end a training session. This brought back memories from college

Thanks to Rebecca for making it practical and easy to follow.
